Zucchinis roting on the ends when small

Author: Jim Kennard

Q. Why do my zucchinis grow to 3-4 inches and then start to rot on the ends. I have tried more water, less water, calcium, nothing works. A. Are you sure they were pollinated? The small fruit that sits behind the female flower will begin to grow, but if pollination did not occur it will die at about the size you describe. The solution to that problem is to hand pollinate your plants by using a male blossom with the petals removed. Just gently brush the female pistil with the male stamen. If pollination DID occur then you probably have a wet condition that is encouraging the rotting. Make sure you stake the plant stems up off the ground, and remove any leaves that are on the ground as well. It's important to have ample moisture, but the ground should NOT remain wet.
